Richmond, VA – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for much of central and southeastern Virginia through 9 a.m. Tuesday, as sub-freezing temperatures overnight are expected to cause a refreeze of melted snow and moisture on area roads, according to the National Weather Service Wakefield.

While snowfall has ended across most of the region, including Richmond, Petersburg, Emporia, and parts of the Virginia Eastern Shore, forecasters warn that slick conditions will redevelop overnight. The combination of wet pavement and temperatures in the teens and 20s could produce black ice, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roadways.

Drivers heading out early Tuesday should allow extra travel time and reduce speed to avoid losing control on icy patches. Pedestrians are also advised to use caution on sidewalks and parking lots, where thin layers of ice may be difficult to see.

The NWS notes that these icy conditions are likely to persist until mid-morning, when rising temperatures allow gradual melting.
