Richmond, VA – A widespread winter system brought several inches of snow across central and western Virginia from Thursday night into Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Wakefield.

Snowfall totals ranged from 2 to 4 inches across much of the region, with the heaviest accumulation reported west of Richmond and along the Interstate 64 corridor. Charlottesville, Louisa, and Goochland counties saw between 3.0 and 3.8 inches, while lighter totals of under one inch were recorded closer to the coast.

Within the Richmond metro area, totals generally ranged between 2.0 and 2.8 inches, while southern counties near Emporia and Petersburg reported between 0.5 and 1 inch. The NWS noted that the snow tapered off by midday Friday, leaving behind slick roads and slushy conditions that could refreeze overnight as temperatures dip below freezing.

The snowfall marked one of the first widespread winter events of the season for Virginia, following a cooler-than-normal start to December.

Motorists are urged to use caution on untreated roads and allow extra travel time through early Saturday morning.
