Richmond, VA – A lingering coastal low is keeping skies gray and temperatures cooler across much of Virginia today, with light showers and drizzle expected through the morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, the low is currently centered over the Northern Neck and will gradually move west before shifting offshore tonight into Thursday. The heaviest rainfall has already passed, but additional light precipitation is possible, mainly west of I-95 and north of I-64.

Daytime highs will stay mild, ranging from the upper 60s to low 70s across central and eastern Virginia. Areas including Richmond, Petersburg, and Norfolk could see passing showers through midday, while drier conditions are forecast later this afternoon. Coastal areas such as Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore will also remain under overcast skies, though rain chances there are lower.

Localized rainfall totals today are expected to remain under half an inch. The coastal system’s exit late tonight will bring improving weather for Thursday, with decreasing cloud cover and a return to drier conditions across the state.

Drivers should expect damp roads during the morning commute and allow extra time for travel. Residents are also advised to keep umbrellas handy until conditions improve later in the day.
