Richmond, VA – The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of central and eastern Virginia, as well as northeast North Carolina, in effect from 1 AM Friday through 1 AM Saturday.

Forecasters expect 1 to 2 inches of snow, along with a light glaze of ice, as a wintry mix spreads across the region overnight and continues through Friday. Locally higher totals are possible in central Virginia, including the Richmond metro area, and along the U.S. 460 and I-95 corridors.

The advisory covers dozens of counties, including Fluvanna, Goochland, Prince Edward, Caroline, Dinwiddie, Sussex, Powhatan, Lunenburg, Nottoway, Greensville, and James City, as well as Northampton County in northeast North Carolina.

The Friday morning and evening commutes could be significantly impacted as snow transitions to light freezing drizzle. Untreated roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces are expected to become slick.

Residents are urged to slow down and use caution if travel is necessary. For the latest road conditions, Virginians can call 511, while North Carolina residents can visit DriveNC.gov.

Snow and freezing drizzle should taper off late Friday night as temperatures slowly rise above freezing.
