Richmond, Va. – Afternoon and evening storms are expected to pop across much of Virginia today, bringing brief but heavy rainfall to some communities and sweltering heat to others. Temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 80s, but humidity will push heat indices into the low 90s, making it a sticky and stormy Wednesday for many.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are likely to develop across central and eastern Virginia after 1 p.m., with most areas seeing under a quarter-inch of rain. However, localized pockets could receive 1–2 inches, especially where storms linger.
Richmond, Petersburg, and Williamsburg can expect highs near 88°F, while Norfolk and Virginia Beach should see similar heat with the potential for strong, brief downpours. Drivers on I-64 and Route 460 should be alert for sudden reduced visibility and ponding on roads.
Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and secure outdoor items that could be blown around by gusty winds in storms.
Storm chances will taper off after sunset, but heat and humidity are expected to stick around for the rest of the week.
