Richland County, SC – Residents in a Richland County neighborhood are being urged to remain alert after a Friday evening shooting left a man injured and an elementary-aged child running for safety as gunfire erupted nearby.

According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, the shooting occurred Friday, January 3, around 5:45 p.m. in the 500 block of Alcot Drive. Investigators say a 24-year-old man was struck by gunfire and survived his injuries.

Authorities are now asking for the public’s help in identifying three suspects believed to be connected to the shooting.

Sheriff Leon Lott said video evidence shows muzzle flashes from the shooters in the top right corner of the footage, while a young child can be seen at the bottom of the screen hearing the shots and running for his life. Investigators said the breezeway the child fled through is the same location where the victim was shot.

“It is by the grace of God this child was not shot and killed,” Sheriff Lott said in a statement. “This is the danger that is out here in our community — people with guns who just do not care. This kind of violence is reckless, inexcusable, and we will hold those involved accountable.”

Deputies emphasized that the incident highlights the growing risks of gun violence in residential areas, especially during early evening hours when families and children are often outside.

Anyone with information that could help identify the suspects is urged to contact the Richland County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 576-3000. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.

Investigators say all tips will be reviewed, and callers may remain anonymous.
