Blythewood, Richland County, SC – A student was arrested Monday morning after deputies say a firearm was discovered on a school bus headed to Blythewood High School, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, the incident unfolded around 8:45 a.m. on May 4, 2026, when 911 Communications received a text message from a student reporting that another student on the bus was in possession of a gun. Authorities identified the student as 18-year-old Kelvin Figueroa.
Deputies and school resource officers located the bus as it arrived at Blythewood High School and immediately intervened. Officials say Figueroa was detained without incident, and a loaded pistol was recovered from his bag.
Sheriff Leon Lott credited the reporting student for helping prevent a potentially dangerous situation. “I want to recognize the student who texted 911,” Lott said. “That took courage, and it made a difference. Because of that student, we were able to intervene immediately and prevent a potentially dangerous situation.”
No injuries were reported, and officials have not indicated that any threats were made prior to the arrest. The situation was contained quickly, minimizing disruption to the school day.
Figueroa has been charged with carrying a weapon on school property and was booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. The investigation remains ongoing, according to authorities.
School officials have not released additional details but emphasized that safety protocols were followed and that the matter was handled promptly.
