Providence, RI – The air feels damp and heavy across Rhode Island this morning as clouds spread from the south, signaling a wet start to the holiday travel rush. Drivers may face patchy fog and slick pavement late today, with steady rain expected to move in tonight and continue into Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, a broad storm system will bring widespread rain across southern New England beginning late this afternoon. Temperatures will climb into the low 50s, but travel along I-95 and Route 146 could slow after sunset as rain intensifies. By Wednesday, showers will linger into the morning before a sharp wind shift ushers in cooler, drier air.

Thanksgiving Day itself looks much improved — mostly sunny and brisk, with highs near 46°F and a west wind up to 15 mph. The crisp air will make it feel colder than it is, so parade-goers and early runners should bundle up. Lows Thursday night dip near 30°F, setting up a frosty Friday morning.

Forecasters note a broader cold push spreading across much of the U.S. through the weekend, keeping below-normal temperatures in place from New England through the Midwest. Some early “winter-tease” flurries could reach northern areas by Sunday.

Five-Day Outlook:

  • Today: Increasing clouds, high 53°F.
  • Wednesday: Rain tapering off, high 60°F.
  • Thanksgiving Day: Mostly sunny, high 46°F.
  • Friday: Mostly sunny, high 42°F.
  • Saturday: Sunny and cool, high 43°F.
