PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A brief moderation in winter temperatures is expected across Rhode Island heading into Valentine’s Day weekend, though forecasters caution that unsettled conditions could bring periods of rain or snow from Feb. 14 through Feb. 20.

Daytime highs on Valentine’s Day are forecast to reach the low to mid-30s statewide, with coastal and urban areas such as Providence likely to flirt with or slightly exceed the freezing mark. Overnight lows are expected to fall into the 20s, creating conditions favorable for refreezing where precipitation occurs.

Rather than a single significant storm, the weather pattern favors several weaker systems passing through southern New England. These disturbances may bring intermittent precipitation, with temperatures hovering close enough to freezing to allow for rain, snow, or a mix depending on timing and location.

Light snow accumulations are possible, particularly during overnight hours or across interior sections of the state. Even minor snowfall could result in slick travel conditions, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Motorists are urged to use caution during early morning and nighttime travel.

Gusty winds may accompany some systems, especially near the coast, which could make temperatures feel colder despite slightly milder daytime highs. While no prolonged warm spell is expected, the pattern marks a departure from recent bouts of more severe cold.

Residents planning Valentine’s Day weekend travel or outdoor activities should continue monitoring local forecasts, as small shifts in temperature could significantly impact precipitation type and road conditions across Rhode Island through the latter half of February.
