PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Drivers heading home Monday evening could face slick roads and heavy downpours as thunderstorms develop across Rhode Island. The evening rush along I-95 through Providence may see reduced visibility and standing water, slowing traffic into the night.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered showers are expected Monday with thunderstorms becoming more likely after 5 p.m. Storms may produce brief heavy rain, with localized totals between a tenth and a quarter of an inch. Commuters should allow extra time and avoid flooded underpasses, especially during peak travel hours.

Temperatures will climb to the low 80s Monday, but clouds and rain will limit afternoon sunshine. Winds will remain light, offering little help dispersing showers. Overnight, the storm threat tapers off with partly cloudy skies and lows near 60 degrees.

Tuesday brings a sharp turnaround as sunny skies return and highs reach the upper 70s. The calmer pattern holds midweek with mostly sunny skies Wednesday and Thursday, offering dry weather for outdoor plans. Cooler nights in the mid-50s will add to the fall-like feel.

By Friday, temperatures rebound into the upper 70s with sunshine continuing. The next chance for unsettled weather holds off until the weekend, when clouds may build Saturday.

Rhode Islanders should plan for a wet Monday evening but expect smoother travel and clear skies through the rest of the workweek. Additional advisories are possible if storm intensity increases late Monday.
