Rhode Island – Streetlights reflect off frozen pavement as cold air settles in. Light flakes drift at times, and winter conditions are beginning to line up just as post-Christmas travel increases.
Across Providence and surrounding communities, temperatures remain firmly below freezing early, hovering in the mid-20s. Skies stay mostly cloudy, and while today remains quiet, changes are already developing.
By Friday night, snow becomes more likely, especially after evening hours. Forecast guidance points to 1 to 3 inches of snow, enough to coat roads and sidewalks. Snow may fall steadily at times, reducing visibility and slowing traffic on I-95, Route 6, and I-195. Drivers should expect slick conditions by late evening.
Saturday brings lingering snow chances, though amounts appear lighter during the day. Highs reach the upper 20s, keeping snow from melting quickly. Untreated roads and parking lots may stay icy, especially in shaded areas.
Saturday night clears out and turns colder again. Lows drop into the mid-teens, locking in any remaining snowpack. By Sunday, sunshine returns, and temperatures rebound near 39 degrees. Melting begins, leaving damp pavement behind.
That thaw sets the stage for the next concern. Meteorologists are now tracking a system arriving late Sunday into Monday. Snow may briefly redevelop Sunday evening before changing to a wintry mix, then rain overnight. Precipitation chances climb near 80 percent, and freezing rain is possible early before temperatures rise.
Monday turns milder, with highs near 45 degrees. Rain continues at times, easing icy conditions but creating wet roads for commuters. Gusty winds may follow as colder air pushes back in.
Travelers should plan ahead. Allow extra time Friday night and Monday morning. Keep winter gear handy. Conditions may shift quickly as December winter weather remains active.
