Providence, R.I. – Rhode Islanders heading into Labor Day weekend should prepare for wet roads Friday before skies clear in time for holiday travel and outdoor plans. Heavy showers and possible thunderstorms could slow traffic on I-95 and other major routes Friday afternoon, raising concerns for commuters and beach-bound travelers.

According to the National Weather Service in Norton, showers will move into the Providence area by midday Friday with storms likely after 2 p.m. Forecasters warn of heavy downpours reducing visibility and slick pavement during the evening commute. Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, avoid flooded low spots, and check for updates if storms intensify.

Showers taper off Friday night, leaving skies mostly clear by Saturday morning. Highs near 74 degrees Saturday and 76 on Sunday will provide a warm, dry stretch for barbecues, beaches, and parades. Light winds and cool overnight lows in the low 50s will add to the comfort.

Labor Day continues the trend, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 70s. Ideal beach conditions are expected along Narragansett and Newport, with calm winds and low humidity making for excellent late-summer weather.

Looking beyond the holiday, early next week remains dry with highs holding in the mid-to-upper 70s. Conditions look stable through midweek, with only slight chances for showers returning by Wednesday night.

Warnings remain in effect through Friday evening, but no additional advisories are posted beyond that.
