Rhode Island – A steady chill greets Rhode Islanders this morning as gray skies and damp air settle across Providence. By late morning, a cold December rain takes over, soaking roads and sidewalks and reminding residents that winter’s edge is closing in.
According to the National Weather Service, rain will continue through this afternoon with highs near 41°F, before colder air filters in tonight. Winds may gust up to 25 mph, especially along the bay, adding bite to the air. Rain tapers by evening, but a drop to the upper 20s means wet pavement could refreeze — a setup for slick spots and black ice by dawn Wednesday.
Commuters along I-95 and Route 146 should use caution as conditions change quickly between wet and icy. Meteorologists say this system marks the beginning of a colder stretch that could bring Rhode Island its first measurable snow of December by Saturday morning.
The midweek stretch looks brighter but brisk — sunny Wednesday and Thursday with highs in the upper 30s to low 40s, but nighttime lows plunge into the teens and 20s. By Friday night, another front brings clouds and a small but notable chance for light snow before sunrise Saturday, especially in northern and inland Rhode Island.
Bundle up and plan ahead — December’s chill has arrived, and roadways could get tricky again by the weekend.
