Rhode Island – Damp roads and low gray clouds are already settling in this morning, and a sharper turn toward messy spring weather is set to impact Providence by late Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, a light rain-snow mix develops early Sunday, then shifts mainly to rain by late morning as temperatures climb near 51°F. Little snow accumulation is expected, but brief bursts of wet flakes could create slushy patches on untreated roads, especially across northern Providence County.
Drivers along I-95, Route 6, and I-295 should plan for reduced visibility and changing road conditions through the afternoon. Rain becomes steadier into the evening, with patchy fog forming and visibility dropping below a mile at times. Keep headlights on and allow extra stopping distance.
Colder air moves in quickly heading into Monday. Rain may mix with or change to light snow before mid-morning Monday, with highs only near 41°F. While accumulation stays minimal, damp surfaces could turn slick as temperatures fall into the upper 20s by early Tuesday.
That setup raises concern for flash freezing. Wet pavement may harden into black ice before sunrise Tuesday, especially on bridges and overpasses. Early commuters should slow down and watch for hidden icy patches.
Skies clear Tuesday with sunshine and highs near 44°F, followed by a gradual warm-up into midweek with highs pushing near 50°F by Wednesday.
Meteorologists are tracking this back-and-forth pattern as spring tries to take hold across southern New England.
