Providence, Rhode Island – As Rhode Island moves into the heart of winter, residents in Providence and across the state are being urged to take immediate steps to protect homes and plumbing as colder air settles in and the winter solstice arrives Sunday, marking the official start of the coldest season of the year.

According to the National Weather Service and state emergency officials, repeated cold nights increase the risk of frozen and burst pipes, especially in older homes common throughout Providence neighborhoods. City officials note that unheated basements, crawl spaces, and exterior walls are particularly vulnerable when temperatures dip below freezing for extended periods.

Across Rhode Island, residents are encouraged to insulate exposed pipes, seal drafts around vents and access doors, and keep thermostats set no lower than the mid-50s, even when away. In Providence, public safety officials also recommend opening cabinet doors beneath sinks to allow warm air to circulate and letting faucets drip slowly during the coldest hours to reduce pressure buildup.

State fire officials stress never using open flames, such as blowtorches or propane heaters, to thaw frozen pipes due to fire risk. Instead, gradual warming with household heat or warm air is advised. As Providence and Rhode Island settle into the colder season ahead, more cold-weather advisories may be issued through the coming weeks as winter conditions persist statewide.
