Providence, R.I. – Rhode Islanders could look up late tonight and catch a rare sight: the Northern Lights glowing across New England skies. As September begins and meteorological fall settles in, the chance of aurora sightings stretches unusually far south, including parts of Rhode Island.

According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, a powerful solar storm from the weekend is fueling possible aurora visibility through Tuesday morning. If skies remain mostly clear, residents as far east as Rhode Island could catch a glimpse before dawn. While the best views are expected in the northern tier states, local stargazers should find a dark area away from I-95 and city lights to improve chances.

Beyond the sky show, Rhode Island will settle into a calm and sunny pattern. Tuesday brings mostly sunny skies and a high near 76 with light winds, a welcome stretch for back-to-school commuters. Wednesday stays warm and bright, topping out near 79. Outdoor plans look favorable, with only minor breezes.

Rain chances return Friday with scattered showers, but sunshine dominates much of the workweek. Travelers and early risers should remain cautious overnight as patchy clouds may briefly reduce visibility on area roadways.

Clear conditions mean tonight offers the best shot for aurora activity. Residents are encouraged to step outside after midnight for a chance to catch the rare glow.
