Providence, R.I. – Strong rain and gusty winds are expected to disrupt Thursday morning commutes across Rhode Island, with the heaviest downpours hitting by dawn.

According to the National Weather Service in Norton, rain begins late Wednesday night and intensifies after 5 a.m. Thursday. Gusts could reach 34 mph in parts of Providence County, particularly along I-95 and Route 146, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of hydroplaning. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches are possible, and urban flood-prone areas should remain alert.

Heavy rain continues through Thursday afternoon, with sustained east winds from 11 to 15 mph and isolated gusts up to 30 mph. Drivers should avoid low-lying roads and plan for delays during peak travel hours.

Rain chances drop off Thursday night but return Friday with scattered showers and another cooldown, as highs stall in the upper 50s. Roads may remain slick, especially before sunrise.

By Saturday, skies begin to clear. Temperatures climb to a more seasonal 61°F under partly sunny skies, continuing into Sunday with highs near 66°F and light winds. Memorial Day on Monday looks dry and mild, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 69°F—ideal for outdoor plans.

Looking Ahead: Tuesday may bring another round of showers, but no major systems are expected beyond Thursday’s impactful weather. Stay tuned to NWS alerts for any flash flood warnings or advisories issued overnight.
