Rhode Island – Bright March sunshine may greet early risers across Providence, but a powerful storm system is already organizing to the west. Conditions will change quickly as warmer air surges north and a potent coastal storm approaches New England.
Temperatures climb to 46°F today with a mix of sun and clouds across Providence and nearby coastal communities. The quiet stretch will not last long.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a High Wind Watch remains in effect from Monday afternoon through late Monday night across Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts. Meteorologists warn that south winds could gust up to 60 mph, strong enough to down tree limbs and trigger scattered power outages.
Rain spreads into the region early Monday, becoming heavy at times by afternoon. Some thunderstorms may develop as warmer air pushes north. Rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches are possible across the Providence metro area.
Travel conditions may deteriorate quickly along I-95, I-195, and Route 6 as winds strengthen. High-profile vehicles will feel the strongest gusts, especially on exposed bridges and coastal roadways.
The strongest winds arrive Monday evening and continue into the night. Gusts near 60 mph could topple small trees and disrupt power lines across parts of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts.
Colder air returns quickly behind the storm. St. Patrick’s Day Tuesday turns breezy but brighter with highs near 44°F. Any lingering wet pavement may freeze early in colder inland areas before sunshine returns.
Calmer weather settles in by midweek. Wednesday brings sunshine with highs near 38°F, followed by a gradual warming trend toward the mid-40s by Thursday.
