Providence, RI – Rhode Island drivers are urged to use caution Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as forecasters warn of a flash freeze likely to impact roads across the state. The National Weather Service says rain and melting snow from earlier Tuesday could freeze within hours as temperatures dip sharply overnight, creating black ice on highways like I-95, Route 146, and Route 1.

A flash freeze occurs when pavement temperatures fall below freezing in a short time, instantly freezing any surface moisture. These conditions can make roads appear simply wet but dangerously slick, particularly on bridges, ramps, and shaded areas.

Experts note that a car traveling 35 mph on icy pavement may need up to 600 feet to stop — nearly six times the distance on dry roads. Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking during early morning hours.

“Even after the rain ends, black ice can form quickly,” the NWS warned in a Tuesday evening advisory. “Expect slick travel through the Wednesday morning commute.”

Drivers across Providence, Kent, and Washington Counties should plan for slower travel and use caution until midmorning as conditions gradually improve.
