Providence, Rhode Island – A sharp and prolonged blast of arctic air is expected to settle into Rhode Island late this week, bringing some of the coldest temperatures of the winter and creating hazardous conditions across the state. Overnight lows are expected to drop to around 1 degree, while daytime highs struggle to climb out of the teens through early next week.
According to the National Weather Service, the coldest period is expected from Saturday through Tuesday as a strong polar air mass pushes into southern New England. Gusty northwest winds will significantly worsen conditions, driving wind chill values down to between 15 and 25 degrees below zero during overnight and early morning hours, when frostbite can occur quickly on exposed skin.
Interior portions of the state, including Providence County and Kent County, are expected to see the coldest readings, though coastal areas such as Newport and Westerly will also feel dangerous wind chills. The combination of cold air, occasional snow showers, and blowing snow could create slick conditions on Interstate 95, Route 6, and Route 146, especially during nighttime travel.
State emergency officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in warm layers, and bring pets indoors. Homeowners are advised to protect exposed pipes and check heating systems, while drivers should carry winter emergency kits in case of breakdowns.
The deep freeze is expected to persist through Tuesday, and additional wind chill advisories or warnings may be issued as conditions develop.
