PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A calm, cold dawn settles over southern New England this Saturday, with quiet skies and temperatures dipping into the low 40s and 30s inland. Frost sparkles across lawns in western Rhode Island while the capital city holds just above freezing — a clear signal that fall is fully in control as Halloween week approaches.

According to the National Weather Service in Norton, today brings full sunshine and highs near 56°F, a classic late-October afternoon under light north winds. Residents along I-95 and the Blackstone Valley will notice a crisp, dry air mass, ideal for cleanup, decorating, or outdoor errands before the pattern shifts. Sunday stays mild but turns partly cloudy as winds calm and moisture begins returning from the south.

By Monday, a blanket of clouds settles over Providence with highs around 52°F and a more humid feel. The next system arrives Tuesday, bringing a 40% chance of light showers through the morning and midday hours. North winds gusting near 20 mph could make it feel colder than the thermometer reads. Wet roads and slick leaves may slow traffic along Route 146 and near downtown intersections during the commute.

While rainfall totals look light, this marks the start of a more unsettled Halloween stretch. Wednesday stays mostly cloudy, and another batch of showers is possible by Thursday — just in time for trick-or-treat setups.

For now, Rhode Islanders can expect a calm weekend before the clouds close in.
