Providence, Rhode Island – A late-season cold surge will push overnight temperatures to near freezing across Rhode Island, creating frost risks and the potential for slick conditions during early morning travel.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, below-normal temperatures will persist across New England through early next week, with Rhode Island seeing readings 5 to 15 degrees below seasonal averages. While precipitation remains near normal, the colder air will allow for occasional winter-like impacts.

Providence is expected to drop to near 32°F between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m., with inland areas dipping slightly below freezing. Cities including Warwick and Cranston will see widespread frost potential, especially away from the immediate coastline.

Light precipitation may develop at times, and with temperatures hovering near freezing, a brief mix of rain and wet snow or isolated freezing rain is possible, particularly on untreated roads and bridges along I-95 and Route 6.

Residents should cover sensitive plants, protect outdoor vegetation, and allow extra time for the morning commute. This colder pattern will persist through early next week, with additional advisories possible as freezing conditions continue.
