Providence, R.I. – Triple-digit heat continues to grip Rhode Island Tuesday as residents along the I-95 corridor battle extreme temperatures and poor air quality. Temperatures in Providence are expected to hit 102°F with heat index values soaring as high as 110°, triggering an Extreme Heat Warning and Air Quality Alert through 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Norton, dangerously hot and humid conditions are affecting much of Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and northern Connecticut. The heat warning spans from Boston to Westerly, with peak stress expected during the afternoon commute. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management has also issued an ozone alert through 11 p.m. due to elevated pollution levels.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, avoid strenuous tasks, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Stay indoors with air conditioning, drink fluids, and monitor symptoms of heat exhaustion, especially if traveling on I-95 or Route 6, where heat buildup can be severe.

Relief may arrive late Wednesday evening, when scattered thunderstorms are expected to roll in after 6 p.m. Though Wednesday’s high will still reach 94°F, increased cloud cover and evening rain may bring temporary cooling across Providence, Warwick, and Cranston.

Heat will ease slightly by Thursday, with highs near 72°F, but isolated showers may persist. Keep devices charged and have a plan for cooling off safely through the week.
