Newport, RI – The National Weather Service in Boston/Norton has issued a Storm Warning for Rhode Island and Massachusetts coastal waters through 8 a.m. Monday, October 13, as powerful winds and hazardous seas continue to batter the region.

According to the weather service, east to northeast winds of 35 to 40 knots—with gusts up to 50 knots—are combining with seas up to 17 feet south of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Conditions are similar across Rhode Island Sound, Block Island Sound, and Nantucket Sound, where waves are ranging from 7 to 13 feet.

Forecasters warn that storm-force winds and dangerous seas could capsize or damage vessels and sharply reduce visibility. Mariners are advised to remain in port or secure vessels until conditions improve later Monday morning.

The National Weather Service urges extreme caution for any remaining vessels offshore, noting that travel by small craft could be life-threatening.
