Martha’s Vineyard, MA – Mariners across southern New England waters are facing rough conditions this morning as gale-force winds and hazardous seas continue off the coasts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Gale Warning remains in effect until 8 a.m. EDT Thursday, Oct. 30, for waters south of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket as well as from Montauk, NY, to Block Island and south of Rhode Island Sound.
Forecasters report northeast winds of 20–30 knots, with gusts up to 35 knots and seas ranging from 6 to 9 feet. The combination of strong winds and steep waves will create dangerous conditions for small and mid-sized vessels, with a risk of capsizing or visibility reduction due to sea spray.
The NWS urges mariners to remain in port or seek safe harbor until conditions improve. Winds and seas are expected to diminish gradually Thursday morning, but residual swell and choppy surf may linger across the offshore routes into the afternoon.
