Providence, R.I. – Triple-digit heat will slam Rhode Island on Tuesday as an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect, pushing heat index values up to 109°F. The National Weather Service has extended the warning through 8 p.m. Tuesday, with life-threatening heat expected to impact communities across Southern New England.

According to the National Weather Service in Norton, dangerously hot conditions will peak Tuesday afternoon. Actual highs could hit 102°F in Providence, while the heat index may climb past 109°F due to high humidity. The advisory covers all of Rhode Island and much of Massachusetts, excluding the Berkshires, Cape Cod, and the Islands.

Cities including Warwick, Pawtucket, and Cranston will feel the brunt of the heat, with impacts especially dangerous along interstates like I-95 and I-295. Prolonged exposure outdoors could lead to heat stroke, especially for seniors and those without air conditioning. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

The region saw a peak of 94°F Monday, with Tuesday expected to be even hotter. Relief begins Tuesday night as temps dip to 77°F, but humid conditions persist. Cooler air may arrive by Friday.

Warnings remain in effect through 8 p.m. Tuesday, and additional heat advisories may be issued midweek.
