Rhinelander, Wisconsin – Freezing rain is expected to create icy travel conditions across northern Wisconsin later today, increasing the risk of slick roads and hazardous driving during the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a period of freezing rain and wintry mix is forecast to develop by late afternoon Monday, primarily affecting areas along and north of Highways 64 and 8, including Rhinelander, Antigo, Crandon, Florence, and surrounding communities. Ice accumulation is expected to reach up to one-tenth of an inch, with snow totals of up to 1 inch possible as precipitation transitions overnight.
The NWS reports that even light ice accumulation can significantly impact road conditions, especially on untreated surfaces, bridges, and overpasses. Travel impacts are expected to be greatest north of Highway 10, where colder surface temperatures will allow ice to form more efficiently.
In addition to roadway hazards, isolated power outages and minor tree damage are possible due to the weight of ice on power lines and branches. The freezing rain is expected to taper off late tonight as precipitation changes to snow and gradually exits the region early Tuesday.
Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for portions of northern Wisconsin. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time. Officials also recommend monitoring updated forecasts and checking local road conditions before traveling.
The timing of the icy conditions may affect evening commuters, students traveling after school activities, and overnight workers, particularly in rural and forested areas where road treatment may be limited.
Residents are encouraged to stay alert for changing conditions, as even brief periods of freezing rain can quickly create dangerous travel situations.
