Rensselaer, IN – A Rensselaer man was arrested Monday following a month-long search after police say he allegedly attacked another man with a baseball bat.

According to the Rensselaer Police Department, the incident happened around 1:30 a.m. on August 30 in the 600 block of Dean’s Place. A victim and a witness reported that 30-year-old Robert Ward of Rensselaer struck the victim in the head and neck with a bat. Officers noted visible red marks on the victim’s neck and a bruise on his head before the suspect allegedly fled the scene in a vehicle.

Police later located the vehicle at a residence on Elza Street, but a woman at the home told officers she did not know Ward’s whereabouts. Despite several attempts over the following days, police were unable to contact him. A report was submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office, which issued a warrant for Ward’s arrest on charges of battery with a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony, and battery resulting in moderate bodily injury, a Level 6 felony.

On September 29, a Jasper County Sheriff’s Deputy initiated a traffic stop north of DeMotte and found Ward inside the vehicle. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Jasper County Jail on the outstanding warrants.

All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
