ALBANY, N.Y. – New Yorkers in the Capital Region should brace for a wet and stormy stretch that could impact the Friday commute. Drivers on I-90 through Rensselaer County may encounter slick roads and reduced visibility as heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms develop.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, rain chances climb sharply by Wednesday evening, continuing into Thursday and peaking Friday morning. Forecasters warn of downpours capable of dropping more than a half-inch of rain in spots, with thunderstorms adding to the hazard. Winds will push from the south, raising humidity and fueling unsettled conditions across much of eastern New York.

Localized flooding in poor drainage areas remains possible, especially near low-lying intersections and underpasses. Commuters should allow extra travel time and avoid driving through standing water. Outdoor plans late this week may need adjustments as lightning and gusty winds move through during peak hours.

The good news for residents is that drier and sunnier skies return just in time for the weekend. Saturday looks mostly sunny with highs in the upper 70s, a welcome break after days of rain. By Sunday, mild fall air dominates, keeping daytime highs in the mid-70s with comfortable nighttime lows in the 50s.

The unsettled pattern could return next week, but early signs point toward continued fall-like temperatures holding steady into the start of October. Residents should monitor for any new advisories, particularly if storms intensify into Friday night.
