Reno, Nevada – Sierra snow above 5,000 feet could impact travel along I-80 and US-50 beginning Monday, with valley rain switching to snow overnight in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, cool and calm conditions will start the weekend before the next storm system moves into the region late Sunday. Light winds and mostly sunny skies are expected Friday, with a slight warming trend into Saturday. High temperatures will reach the upper 50s in western Nevada valleys and mid-40s in Sierra communities.
By Sunday, gusty ridge winds are forecast to develop as the next storm approaches, potentially affecting aviation and high-profile vehicles along Interstate 580 and U.S. 395.
Forecasters indicate Sierra snow levels will begin above 5,000 feet Monday, with valley rain possible before colder air allows snow levels to lower overnight. Widespread travel impacts are expected in mountain corridors, including Interstate 80 near Donner Summit and U.S. Highway 50 over Echo Summit.
Snow is expected to continue into Tuesday, with accumulations primarily in higher elevations. Strong ridge-top winds may create areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility in exposed areas.
Monday morning and evening commutes could see delays, particularly for drivers crossing Sierra passes. College students, ski traffic, and holiday travelers may experience changing road conditions as the system strengthens.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts as snowfall totals and snow levels become clearer heading into early next week.
