Reno, NV – A pair of weather advisories are set to impact Western Nevada on Friday, June 13, with gusty winds and low humidity creating dangerous conditions for both boaters and those in wildfire-prone areas.
The Lake Wind Advisory begins at 11 a.m. and continues until 9 p.m. Friday, impacting the region around Pyramid Lake and surrounding areas. Winds from the southwest will range between 10 to 20 mph, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph. Residents and visitors near the lake should take precautions, especially on small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards, as the conditions may cause sudden capsizing. The National Weather Service warns that wave heights could reach 3 feet at Pyramid Lake, making water activities hazardous.
In addition, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for much of Western Nevada on Friday, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., due to gusty winds and low humidity. Areas such as Reno, Sparks, Carson City, and Douglas County will experience winds between 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. The combination of these conditions heightens the risk of wildfires, especially in areas recently affected by lightning. The dry conditions, coupled with the strong winds, could cause any existing fires to grow rapidly. The NWS urges residents to avoid outdoor activities like yard work, target shooting, or campfires that could spark a fire.
Looking ahead, the weekend forecast shows a slight break from these extreme conditions. Saturday will be mostly sunny, with highs in the mid-80s, though winds may still gust up to 25 mph. By Sunday, conditions will calm even further, with highs near 88°F and light winds in the afternoon.
