Nevada — Clouds thicken fast over the Truckee Meadows as colder air presses in from the west. By evening, light snowflakes may begin drifting across Reno, carried sideways by gusty winds. Conditions are lining up for a tricky stretch that could catch drivers off guard.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the greater Reno–Carson City–Minden area from this evening through early Thursday. Snow accumulations of a trace to 2 inches are expected in the valley, with localized totals up to 4 inches possible under narrow snow bands. Winds may gust above 35 mph, reducing visibility quickly when snow intensifies.
The most noticeable impacts arrive late tonight into early Thursday. Roads that appear merely wet can turn slick fast, especially on bridges and elevated surfaces. I-80, I-580, and surface streets across Sparks and south Reno may see brief slowdowns as snow bands pass through. Conditions may deteriorate rapidly during heavier bursts.
Thursday morning’s commute carries the highest risk. Snow tapers after sunrise, but lingering slick spots and packed snow could persist in shaded areas. Crews will be working, yet rapid bursts of snow may briefly outpace treatment efforts.
Skies clear later Thursday, but the cold deepens. Highs struggle into the mid-30s, and temperatures drop sharply Thursday night. Lows sink into the teens, setting up a hard freeze by Friday morning. Any melted snow may refreeze, creating black ice in spots before sunrise.
Friday turns sunny and calmer, though cold air lingers. The weekend looks quieter and slightly warmer, with highs returning to the mid-40s. Early next week continues dry, but cold mornings remain a winter staple across western Nevada.
Plan extra time if traveling tonight or early Thursday. Slow down in snow bands and watch for sudden visibility drops.
