Reno, Nev. – A Flash Flood Watch is in effect Tuesday for the eastern Sierra and much of western Nevada, where scattered thunderstorms could trigger dangerous flooding and road hazards through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, the watch includes Mono, Mineral, and southern Lyon counties and remains in place from noon until 9 p.m. Thunderstorms are expected to repeatedly pass over the same areas, raising the risk for creeks and streams to overflow, while runoff could quickly inundate roads and low-lying areas.
Emergency managers warn drivers to avoid flooded roads, especially in burn scars and steep terrain where mudslides and debris flows are more likely. Officials stress the “turn around, don’t drown” rule, as even shallow water can sweep away vehicles.
Travelers on U.S. 395, State Route 95, and other rural highways could encounter sudden water over the roadway, while residents in communities such as Hawthorne, Yerington, and Bridgeport should prepare for potential flooding impacts.
The flood watch is expected to expire Tuesday night, but unsettled conditions could continue midweek with more showers possible.
