Reno, Nevada – A weekend of dangerous fire weather is ahead for northern Nevada and the eastern Sierra, with gusty winds and dry lightning expected to elevate wildfire risks starting Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect from 11 a.m. Saturday through 11 p.m. Sunday for areas including Carson City, Douglas, Storey, Southern Washoe, Western Lyon, Southern Mono County, and more. Southwest winds could reach 40 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph in wind-prone zones.

Humidity levels are forecast to drop as low as 10%, and there’s a 10–15% chance of isolated dry thunderstorms, particularly in the Sierra. These conditions may lead to rapid fire growth if any spark ignites dry vegetation.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor activities that could ignite fires, such as yard work, campfires, or target shooting. Local fire restrictions remain in effect.

This marks the first significant fire weather threat of the season. Alerts may be upgraded to Red Flag Warnings if conditions worsen. Stay updated via weather.gov/reno.
