Georgetown, Delaware – Roads across southern Delaware could shut down by midafternoon as a blizzard barrels into the region with up to 19 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 55 mph through 6 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect for Inland Sussex County and the Delaware Beaches from 1 p.m. Sunday until 6 p.m. Monday. Snow will intensify late today, with the heaviest bands developing tonight. Forecasters say snowfall rates could exceed 2 inches per hour, while powerful wind gusts whip falling snow into whiteout conditions.

Coastal routes including Route 1 near Rehoboth Beach, Route 113 and Route 9 could see rapid accumulation and drifting, especially on bridges and exposed stretches near the Atlantic. Some mixed precipitation is possible this evening before a full changeover to heavy snow, which may create icy layers beneath fresh accumulation. The worst conditions are expected overnight into the Monday morning commute, with dangerous travel lingering into Monday evening.

Strong winds may snap tree limbs and trigger scattered power outages across Sussex County. Emergency officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel and prepare for extended periods indoors. Keep mobile devices charged and check on vulnerable neighbors.

Snow will taper during the day Monday, but blowing snow may continue reducing visibility. Additional advisories could follow as cleanup begins late Monday.
