Grand Forks, North Dakota – Blizzard conditions are forecast to develop late tonight and persist into Thursday, bringing dangerous and potentially impossible travel across parts of northeast North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, falling snow combined with very strong winds will produce widespread blowing snow and whiteout conditions. Areas highlighted in red on the forecast map — including much of the Red River Valley — are expected to experience the most severe impacts.

Forecasters warn that visibility may drop to near zero at times while snow is falling, making travel extremely hazardous. Even areas outside the highest-impact zone could see periodic whiteout conditions as wind-driven snow moves through.

The blizzard is expected to intensify overnight and continue through much of Thursday. High winds will not only reduce visibility but also cause significant drifting, potentially blocking rural roads and stranding vehicles.

The National Weather Service urges residents to avoid travel if possible and to reconsider any overnight or Thursday morning trips. Those who must travel are advised to ensure their vehicles are equipped with winter survival kits and to check road conditions before departing.

Conditions may change rapidly, and impacts could persist longer in open areas prone to blowing snow.

The storm is expected to significantly affect overnight travelers, morning commuters, and students across the Red River Valley.
