Omaha, NE – Extreme fire danger has prompted Red Flag Warnings for much of Nebraska and western Iowa. The warnings, in effect today and Thursday, are fueled by gusty winds and low humidity. With winds reaching 45 mph and humidity dropping to 15%, fires can ignite easily and spread rapidly.

According to the National Weather Service, these conditions will peak between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. today. Areas in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa face the highest risk. Fires can spread quickly, making outdoor burning highly discouraged.

The weather service also warned that fire danger could extend into Friday. As of Thursday, a Fire Weather Watch remains in effect, with similar weather conditions continuing.
