Pocatello, ID – Air quality and red flag warnings have been issued for parts of Idaho, with conditions expected to worsen. The National Weather Service in Pocatello reports that smoke from new wildfires near Sun Valley and Stanley will spread across the region by Wednesday. Residents should prepare for deteriorating air quality, particularly in Southeast Idaho.
A High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) model indicates that winds will shift to the north later today, pushing the smoke southward. This will exacerbate conditions already affected by ongoing fires. The smoke could create hazardous breathing conditions, especially for sensitive groups.
According to the National Weather Service, a red flag warning is in effect due to dry, scattered thunderstorms expected today. These storms may bring outflow winds of 20 to 40 mph, increasing the risk of wildfires. The warning covers much of central Idaho, including areas near Leadore, Salmon, and Challis.
Authorities urge residents to stay indoors if possible and monitor updates. With gusty winds forecasted, fire management teams are on high alert. The combination of strong winds and dry conditions may lead to rapid fire spread.
