Lubbock, TX – Breezy and unseasonably warm weather is expected across the South Plains today, bringing highs in the 80s and increasing the risk of wildfires. A Red Flag Warning is in effect across the region due to strong winds, dry conditions, and critically low humidity.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching 40 mph, will create dangerous fire conditions. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 5 to 9 percent, significantly increasing the risk of rapid wildfire spread.
Cities including Lubbock (84°F), Childress (87°F), and Aspermont (88°F) will experience warm and dry conditions throughout the day. The Red Flag Warning remains in effect from noon until 10 PM CDT. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, dispose of cigarettes properly, and refrain from using equipment that may create sparks.
Officials advise staying alert for any wildfire reports and following local emergency updates. With the combination of high temperatures, strong winds, and dry air, fire crews remain on high alert across the South Plains and the Texas Panhandle.
