Albany, NY – A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday for large portions of New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts due to critical fire weather conditions. Officials warn that dry air, gusty winds, and low humidity create an elevated risk for rapid fire spread across the region.

The National Weather Service issued warnings for the Hudson Valley, Catskills, New York City, and Long Island in New York; all of New Jersey; and much of Massachusetts, including the Berkshires and areas surrounding Boston. Winds are forecasted to reach 15-20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Humidity levels could drop to 25% or lower, with temperatures ranging from the 50s to low 60s.

According to the National Weather Service, the conditions are ripe for any fires that ignite to spread quickly. Residents are advised to avoid outdoor burning and ensure no sparks or embers escape from outdoor equipment or grills. Dry vegetation, coupled with strong winds, could exacerbate fire risks.

In Massachusetts, the warning extends to areas including Berkshire, Suffolk, and Plymouth counties, while in New Jersey, it affects all regions from Sussex County in the north to Cape May in the south. In New York, the warning covers areas from the Lower Hudson Valley to the Catskills.

State and local officials are urging residents to remain cautious and report any signs of wildfire activity immediately. Many regions have implemented burn bans as a precaution.

The Red Flag Warning follows unseasonably dry conditions this fall, which have left much of the region’s vegetation susceptible to ignition. The National Weather Service advises that conditions are expected to improve after 6 p.m. Saturday, as winds diminish and humidity levels rise slightly.
