Grand Forks, ND – A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. today for eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. Low humidity and gusty winds are expected to create dangerous fire conditions throughout the day.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), south winds of 20 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph, are forecasted. Humidity levels will drop to as low as 20%, increasing the risk of fast-spreading wildfires. Affected areas include Grand Forks, Traill, Cass, and Steele counties in North Dakota, along with Polk, Clay, and Becker counties in Minnesota.
Residents are advised to avoid outdoor burning and any activities that may produce sparks, as any fires that start could rapidly become uncontrollable. Rural homeowners should clear away dry vegetation from around their homes and remain alert for emergency updates.
The NWS emphasizes that today’s conditions are highly favorable for fire spread, and precautions should be taken to prevent fire ignition. While winds are expected to diminish by evening, fire risk remains elevated until the warning expires at 7 p.m.
