Midland, TX – West Texas is under an elevated fire threat as the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for multiple counties, including Culberson, Hudspeth, Brewster, and Presidio, from noon to 8 PM CST Friday due to strong winds and critically dry conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Midland and El Paso, a combination of southwest winds between 20 to 30 mph, gusting up to 45 mph, and relative humidity as low as 5% will create extreme wildfire danger across the Van Horn corridor, Davis Mountains, Marfa Plateau, Big Bend, and Hudspeth County. Fire behavior experts have classified conditions as extreme, warning that any ignition could quickly develop into a fast-moving wildfire.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, open flames, or any activities that may generate sparks, such as welding or operating machinery near dry grass. Cigarettes should be fully extinguished, and chains on vehicles should not drag to prevent sparks.
While temperatures will remain near seasonal norms in the lower 70s, the dry air mass and sustained winds increase the risk of fire spread. Officials advise residents and landowners in the affected areas to remain vigilant and prepare evacuation plans if necessary. The warning remains in effect until 8 PM CST Friday.
