Burlington, VT – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for portions of northern Vermont and northern New York today, as a combination of dry fuels, low humidity, and gusty winds heighten the risk of wildfires spreading rapidly.
According to the NWS Burlington office, the warning is in effect from noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. During this time, any outdoor fire activity — including campfires, burning yard debris, or even sparks from equipment — could lead to dangerous fire growth that is difficult to control.
Meteorologists say brisk winds and relative humidity levels as low as 20–25% will create ideal conditions for quick ignition and spread. While the greatest threat exists within the official warning zone, the agency advised that “all of Vermont and northern New York should take the necessary precautions and avoid any fires or sparks.”
Residents are urged not to conduct any outdoor burning and to be especially cautious with anything that could generate sparks, such as chainsaws, grills, or vehicles parked on dry grass.
