Bend, Oregon – Critical fire weather conditions are set to grip Central Oregon Tuesday, as a Red Flag Warning goes into effect from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m., raising the threat of fast-moving wildfires in Deschutes, Jefferson, and Crook counties. Gusty, erratic winds and abundant lightning could spark new fires and threaten communities from Sisters to Sunriver.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, scattered thunderstorms will develop Tuesday afternoon and evening, with lightning strikes likely across the Central Mountains and Southern Deschutes National Forest. Wind gusts of 45 to 60 mph may quickly fan any new fire starts, while daytime humidity dips into the teens, creating extremely dry conditions. A Fire Weather Watch follows from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning, extending the risk for more dangerous lightning and rapid fire growth.

Officials urge residents to avoid all outdoor burning, stay alert for new fire starts, and prepare for sudden evacuations—especially in areas along Highway 97, Sisters, and La Pine. Keep phones charged, have a go-bag ready, and check local alerts. Fire crews warn even brief showers won’t offset the fire risk if dry lightning occurs. This marks one of the most volatile fire weather setups so far this July.

The Red Flag Warning remains in effect through 11 p.m. Tuesday, with additional advisories possible as conditions evolve. Stay tuned to updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management.
