Des Moines, IA – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for much of Iowa and Nebraska today, as strong winds, low humidity, and dry conditions increase the risk of wildfires. The warning, issued by the National Weather Service, remains in place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. CDT for affected areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, central and northern Iowa will experience southwest winds of 20 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 35 mph. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 15 percent, creating conditions where fires can ignite and spread rapidly. Similar conditions are forecast for central and eastern Nebraska, where gusts may reach 40 mph in some areas.

The Omaha/Valley and North Platte National Weather Service offices have also issued warnings for Nebraska, citing high temperatures nearing 80 degrees and humidity levels as low as 11 percent. Counties impacted include Platte, Douglas, Lancaster, and others across eastern Nebraska, as well as portions of the Sandhills and Panhandle regions.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and to take precautions to prevent accidental fires. Any flames that develop could become difficult to control due to the dry and windy conditions.
