Chicago, IL – Earth is on pace to record its warmest year in history, with NCEl’s Global Annual Temperature Rankings Outlook estimating a 99% likelihood for 2024 to claim the top spot.
November 2024 was the second-warmest November on record, just behind November 2023. Global temperatures soared 2.41°F (1.34°C) above the 20th-century average. NOAA reports every continent, except Asia, has already logged its warmest January-to-November stretch ever.
Asia, however, still saw its hottest November on record, while South America and Oceania had their second-warmest. Sea ice continued shrinking, with Arctic levels ranking third-lowest for November and Antarctic levels reaching a record low.
The warming trend is being exacerbated by El Niño conditions, which drove above-average sea surface temperatures across much of the Pacific. Additionally, November tied for the most tropical storms globally, with 12 named storms, including Hurricane Rafael, which peaked as a Category 3 storm.
Scientists emphasize the urgent need for climate action, warning that the record heat underscores the accelerating effects of global warming.
