Ravenna, Ohio – A Level 1 Snow Emergency was issued in Ravenna and across Portage County at 6 a.m. Monday, warning drivers of hazardous road conditions and urging caution for anyone who must travel.
According to the Portage County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Bruce D. Zuchowski declared the emergency effective immediately and until further notice. A Level 1 Snow Emergency indicates that roadways are dangerous due to snow and ice, and motorists are advised to drive cautiously.
Officials urged residents to limit travel if possible, particularly during the morning hours, as snow-covered and slick roads increase the risk of crashes. Drivers who must be on the road are encouraged to reduce speeds, increase following distances, and remain alert to rapidly changing conditions.
The sheriff’s office also emphasized personal safety at home, advising residents to stay indoors when possible, prepare for potential power outages, and check on elderly neighbors or those with limited mobility.
Authorities reminded the public that Level 1 emergencies are often issued during the early stages of winter weather impacts and may be upgraded if conditions worsen.
The alert is especially relevant for morning commuters and essential workers, as roadway conditions may remain hazardous until crews can improve travel conditions.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the Portage County Sheriff’s Office and local officials for any changes to the emergency level.
