Covington County, MS – Nature decided to double down on destruction in Mississippi last weekend, as two tornadoes crossed paths in the same exact spot just 41 minutes apart. The storms tore through western Covington County on Saturday afternoon, creating a rare “X-marks-the-spot” event meteorologists say is highly unusual.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, the first tornado, an EF4 that originated in Louisiana, had already traveled over 67 miles before reaching the area north of Spring Hill School Road. The second storm, stronger and wider, formed near Bassfield and carved a nearly identical path, striking the same location less than an hour later.
Radar data confirmed both storms produced tornadic debris signatures (TDS), highlighting the extraordinary misfortune of the affected area. The aftermath shows a clear intersection where the two tornadoes crossed—an eerie sight that looks like something out of a disaster movie.
If you’re wondering where else you can find something that’s gone from bad to worse and then somehow even worse, might we suggest checking out the website formerly known as Twitter? Unlike these tornadoes, at least you can mute that storm.
Residents in tornado-prone areas are reminded to have a safety plan and monitor alerts from NWS during severe weather events.
