Frankfort, IL – Residents in Illinois were treated to a rare sight early Friday when a massive meteor streaked across the sky before exploding over Will County. The meteor, appearing as a bright fireball, was visible for only a few seconds but left a lasting impression as it illuminated the night.

According to the American Meteor Society, the meteor was first observed near Champaign, Illinois, around 12:17 a.m. It traveled across the state and eventually disintegrated over Lake Michigan. Security cameras in Frankfort, Illinois, captured the dramatic moment of its fiery explosion, showcasing a rare cosmic event.

Reports indicate that the fireball was also visible in nearby states, including Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, further highlighting its size and brightness. Experts link the meteor to the annual Taurid meteor shower, which peaks this month. The southern Taurid meteor shower peaked Tuesday, while the northern Taurids will reach their height on Tuesday, November 12.

The Taurid showers, known for producing occasional fireballs, are a November highlight for stargazers. This recent explosion added an extra spectacle to the ongoing meteor activity over the Midwest.
