Raleigh, North Carolina – Raleigh is under an Extreme Heat Warning through Monday as dangerous temperatures combine with the threat of severe thunderstorms and damaging winds by Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, heat index values could climb well above 105°F across much of central and eastern North Carolina, including Wake, Johnston, and Wilson counties. The most intense heat will persist through the early part of the week, with peak danger during the afternoon hours. A Heat Advisory is also in effect for surrounding counties such as Alamance, Moore, and Lee.
The oppressive heat is only part of today’s weather threat. Isolated severe thunderstorms are expected late this afternoon and evening, especially from Raleigh eastward toward Rocky Mount and Greenville. Damaging wind gusts are the primary hazard, with the potential to down trees and power lines.
Residents are urged to avoid strenuous activity outdoors, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable individuals. Limit time outside between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., and make use of cooling centers if necessary. Charge mobile devices and prepare for brief power outages if storms intensify.
Heat alerts remain in place through Monday, and more severe weather may develop midweek. The National Weather Service will issue updates as conditions evolve.
